Earthquake Early Warning

Earthquake Early Warnings (EEW for short) are a type of warning issued by the Seismology Observation Institute of the Jatoverse to Jatoverse states. The SOIJ uses a system of accelerometers, seismometers, and advanced computers to detect earthquake waves, process the information and quickly issue warnings to adjoining states of a substantial earthquake once one begins.

How it works

When an earthquake occurs, the P waves are detected by the network of seismometers and accelerometers. Such waves are weak and cause slight shaking. The information is sent to the SOIJ and processed using multiple computers to locate epicenter, date. approximate depth and magnitude.

If calculations determine that an earthquake is expected to cause strong shaking (JMIS 4> | MMI VI> | Shindo 5->) in a state, earthquake warnings are issued to cellphones and sirens of said state. Additionally, TV broadcasters use the information given by SOIJ to also issue warnings on their TV broadcast.

History

After the events of the 1999 Löckelle Earthquake, the SOIJ planned on building a quick system capable of alerting users of an earthquake before the shear waves arrive at their location. After improving their seismometer network, and doing private testing for a couple of years, Earthquake Early Warnings were set live and began being used by TV broadcasters in 2007.
